Here are some common mistakes to avoid when writing your resume.
Don’t:
- Include Personal Information
Personal information such as height and weight does not belong on most resumes. You are giving and overview of your professional life, not your personal life. The exception would be for modeling or acting jobs. Do not include a photograph. - Forget to Proofread
carefully check the spelling and grammar on the document. Get someone else to look at it so nothing is missed. Also check to see the format is easy to read.
Make good use of white space and use bullet points. - Try Gimmicks
Skip the pink paper and fancy fonts. Don’t use pictures or graphics. Use standard non serif fonts and standard formatting. Again use plenty of white space, which makes the resume easier to scan. Don’t use humor or jokes. Keep your presentation professional.
- Forget Contact Information
Include an address and phone number. Do not use your work number if you are still employed. It does not look good to be job hunting on company time.
Any voice mail an employer reaches should be professional. An email listed should be professional. No cute or funny email names. Open up a new account for your job search if needed.
- Don’t Show Irrelevant Information
Do not include information on outside interests or hobbies unless they to the prospective job. Do not list memberships in political or religious organizations. Do list membership and experience in professional organizations. Charity or civic work can be listed if the experience is relevant in your job search. List past job experience if it relates to this job search. You do not need to list every job you have had.
